The history of Carlson’s Flooring America dates back to the mid-1800s, a story rooted in tradition, craftsmanship, and an enduring commitment to quality.
Herman Carlson, the great-grandfather of Travis Carlson, arrived in the United States at the age of 11. Immigrating from Sweden to Staten Island by ship, Herman exemplified the values of hard work and determination from a young age. He served in the Army during World War I and, upon returning, honed his craft in silver polishing before mastering the art of metal ceiling and wood flooring installation. Many of his meticulously crafted metal ceilings and wood floors still grace buildings throughout New York City, a testament to his skill and dedication. Herman and his wife, Martha, raised 11 children, though the Flu Epidemic of 1918 tragically claimed the lives of four. One of their surviving children, Frank Carlson, carried forward the family’s legacy of excellence.
Frank Carlson left home at just 13 and found his life’s calling in flooring. He married his lifelong love, Florence, and served in the Navy during World War II. After the war, Frank raised five children while becoming a master in his trade, specializing in hand-planing and beveling wood and vinyl planks — skills that have become rare in today’s era of advanced technology. Frank continued installing wood, carpet, and vinyl flooring well into his 70s, setting a strong example of craftsmanship and dedication for the next generation.
Frank’s eldest son, Al Carlson, began working alongside his father at the age of 12. After serving in the Navy during the Vietnam War, Al returned home to launch his career as a third-generation flooring installer. Under his father’s guidance, Al mastered hand-sewing carpets and built a reputation as a respected craftsman in the flooring industry. In 1977, Al moved to Florida, seeking new opportunities, and opened his first retail flooring store. A Certified Flooring Installer (CFI) and Master Installer, Al has upheld the Carlson family’s commitment to quality, excellence, and customer satisfaction.
Continuing the family legacy, Travis Carlson began working with his father at the age of 12. A graduate of Fort Myers High School, Travis earned a degree in Housing with a minor in Business from Florida State University while continuing to work in the flooring industry.
After college, Travis became a Certified Flooring Executive (CFE), the highest level of certification in the flooring industry, becoming the youngest person to achieve this milestone. A recipient of the prestigious 40 Under 40 Class of 2010 Award from the Gulf Coast Business Review, Travis has also been featured in the Business Observer for his leadership and contributions to the industry.
